How to Change Category Position in Magento 2

Do you want to move a category more to the left of your top navigation menu? Or you may want to move a subcategory to a different category altogether.

Magento allows you to simply drag and drop the categories to change their position in the category tree.

Follow these steps to change category position in the top menu of your Magento 2 ecommerce website.

Step 1: Go to Products => Categories (under Inventory)

Categories submenu in Products

You’ll be displayed the Default Category page.

You can access the category tree from the left sidebar.

Step 2: Click on ‘+’ button to expand categories in the category tree to show the subcategories.

With the current category tree settings, our storefront top menu looks like this:

We’ll use Women category as our example. Right now it has two subcategories – Tops and Bottoms.

We want to move Watches subcategory from the Gear to Women category.

Step 3: Drag and drop the subcategory which you want to move to the desired position.

Click Ok to proceed. Updating category positions and hierarchy takes a lot of resources in Magento. Once Magento finishes the process, you’ll see the following screen:

Step 5: Click on Save button in the top right corner to save the configuration.

Category moved successfully

The storefront navigation with the updated category positions now looks like:
